56th ANNUAL KIDS FISH DERBY

The 56th Annual Kids Fishing Derby will be held on June 8th 2008.  Our 2 acre pond is stocked to the gills with all kinds of fish, such as bullheads, catfish, sunfish, bass, and even a goldfish! One of the fish is tagged and will be worth $20.00 to whoever catches it!  Fishing starts at 10:00 A.M. and continues until 3:00 P.M.  There will be prizes awarded to the TOP 20 kids 14 and under catching the heaviest fish; however, all children 14 and under present, will receive a door prize. So bring as many kids as you can fit in your vehicle, load up the fishing equipment, and head to the Falcon Sportsmen Club for a day of fun, fishing, and first-rate prizes!   There will be more to do than just fish. There will also be drawings, and raffles for even bigger and better prizes! We will have exhibits by the NYSDEC of local game fish that you can reach in and touch, as well as great food and beverages. We are planning a huge chicken barbecue, with all the trimmings of a summertime picnic, so bring an appetite! Hoffman hots, and burgers will be grilling, coupled with salads of all kinds, and of course Ice cold beverages will be available to quench that summer thirst from a long day of fishing. Due to insurance regulations, we must ask that you do not bring any coolers or grills to the club grounds. Also, we must insist that there will be NO CHUMMING permitted in the pond. Also, please do not let the children play on or near the trap ranges, including collecting clay birds! We thank you in advance for respecting these requests. We are sure that all who come to participate in our fishing derby will have a great time, as this will surely be a day for your children to remember for years to come!!

As always, the PUBLIC IS WELCOME to attend this event. So tell your friends, Grab some fishin’ poles, and head out to the club with a car load of KIDS!! We want to see them here!

Clubhouse News

Anyone who spends more than 5 minutes listening to our older members reminiscing about the “good old days” can agree that we have had a rich and interesting past. We would like to gather and preserve that lore for future generations. If you have any old photos of past events, or from the club grounds, and are willing to share them with the club, we would appreciate it! Simply mail them to the club “Attn. Historian” and we will promptly have them copied then returned to you!

Also, starting May 8th, 2008, the clubhouse will be open and available to members every Friday night from 3 PM, until 9 PM (or later!).  If you are starting the weekend, or finishing the week, stop by and enjoy what the club has to offer.

As sportsmen, we love our pets, and we welcome them at the club. We want your pets to be able to enjoy the club grounds too, but for safety reasons, theirs and those around them, please remember to keep them always under the owners’ control while in the clubhouse.

Pheasants are here!

100 Ring-neck chicks arrived in May.

These chicks will be part of our annual Youth Pheasant Hunt to be held this fall, the Saturday after our annual Fall Turkey Shoot Fundraiser. This hunt is open to young hunters 12 to 17 years old. If you have a young hunter who wishes to help with the feeding and care of these birds, or if you want to get involved yourself, please come to the clubhouse on any morning, and volunteer! Your help is greatly needed and appreciated.

We are also looking for landholders to volunteer their farms to be open to the youths this year, for hunting purposes. Those that are willing to participate in this, must by NYSDEC regulations, provide “Reasonable hunting access” to the public. This doesn’t mean that your property is open to the public! Should you be approached and asked for permission to utilize your property, you have the final say whether to give permission or not. We also are in need of volunteers to help and assist during the hunts themselves. If we cannot get enough help, it will mean even more youth hunters will be denied this spectacular opportunity to participate in a tradition that dates back generations!!

Fish & Game Board

Entries are continuously being sought for the fish and game contest.

Fish that can be weighed in include:  Brook trout, Brown trout, Rainbow trout, Lake trout, Chinook salmon, Largemouth bass, Small mouth bass, Catfish, Yellow perch, Walleye, Northern pike, and Pickerel. Please note that Bullhead, Sunfish/Bluegill, and Crappie are children only.

Game animals are within their own separate categories. Deer taken by archery and firearm utilize a points/spread combination; we are no longer weighing in deer for this game board. Other game categories include Coyote, Squirrel, Rabbit, Grouse, Pheasant, Goose, Duck and Turkey (with a separate prize for both spring and fall).

All deer racks must be measured at the clubhouse.

Weigh in stations are at the Falcon’s clubhouse, Warrens Fur Shed, Trombley Road, Weedsport, or by submission of a weight slip from a local business with certified scales.  Please SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS!

NEW BBQ SHELTER!

This is the year of the long awaited new BBQ shelter and pits. The board of directors has approved it, a committee has been appointed and plans have been made. Now we are looking for material donations to help keep our costs as low as possible. The following items would be of great help. 2”X6” lumber at least 6’ long, 2”X4” lumber at least 3’ long,  Metal roofing of any length (GOOD condition only, please!), rebar of any length, and of course the MOST IMPORTANT part… FREE LABOR! Anyone able to donate, please see Lorenzo at the clubhouse, or call to arrange a time.

HUNTER SAFETY COURSE Schedules

NYSDEC requires a hunter safety certificate for a first time hunting license. Two hunter safety courses are planned so far this fall, the first will be held on three days in September. The 9th, and 11th from 6 to 9 PM. And the 13th from 9AM until appx. 1 PM that day.  Registration is at the clubhouse on August, 17th between 2 and 3 PM. The second course will be from 6-9:30 PM on November 4th and 6th, and from 9 AM till appx. 1 PM on the 8th. Pre-registration will be October 19th at the Turkey Shoot at the clubhouse, between 2 and 3 PM.  Please call the clubhouse for more information or Gary Snyder at 729-1423. Please, DO NOT bring firearms to the classes.

Firearm Range Information

DUE TO INSURANCE REGULATIONS, THERE ARE NO GUESTS ALLOWED ON THE RANGES!

If you do not have a valid membership card, you are NOT A MEMBER, STAY OFF THE RANGES!

Members caught violating range policy WILL HAVE THEIR MEMBERSHIPS REVOKED FOR NOT LESS THAN 5 YEARS!!! NON MEMBERS caught on the ranges will be ARRESTED FOR TRESPASSING!

Please PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF! What you carry in, please carry out! We provide clothespins for attaching of PAPER TARGETS to the berm fences. REMEMBER, on the Ranges, it is PAPER TARGETS ONLY!! No Cardboard targets, no cans, or bottles, or junk of any kind. These items not only leave a mess that requires to be cleaned up, but can also leave a potentially hazardous situation for those that use the range after you do. We find it is easier to eliminate the violators, than it is to find one volunteer to clean up after those that leave a mess.

The firearm ranges will be CLOSED for the first 16 workdays in June for the Auburn Police Department to utilize the facilities to qualify. The dates will be WEEKDAYS from Monday the 2nd, through Monday the 23rd, from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM, and open to members after that. The ranges will be fully open to members on WEEKENDS ONLY during this time! We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Scholarship Program

This year the club started a scholarship award in Honor of Tim Noga. The award will be presented to a graduating high school senior that supports the preservation of the hunting and fishing tradition and actively participates in these activities. Tim was an active club member until his untimely passing in the fall of 2007. He was committed to youth involvement in the outdoors and had often hoped to start such a scholarship program. It is with great pleasure that the club will award $500.00 this year to an eligible member.

This year, applications will be accepted until June 1, 2008. Further details, eligibility, and application forms are available at the club's website: falconsportsmenclub.org. We hope to make this an annual event for many years to come.

Anyone interested in contributing to our scholarship program may send their tax deductible checks to: Falcon Sportsmen Club Attn.: Scholarship Program.

Membership and Guest Policy

The board of directors has determined that there is no guest use of club property without special permission. The club founders intended the membership donation to be reasonable enough that any member of the community could afford to belong. That tradition has been kept. Nowhere else in Central New York, is it possible to become part of a club that offers so much to its membership, for so little, as you can at the Falcons Sportsmen Club. For only $20.00 per year, you and your family can join, and enjoy the facilities all year long.

You may show club facilities to prospective members, but they may not use them until they become a member.  The only exceptions to this are our events that are open to the public, including the Annual Kids Fish Derby, our Annual Turkey Shoot or Hunter/Firearm safety classes.

Applications are available in the box at the clubhouse entrance. Just fill out a membership application; place your money in the box along with your completed application, and YOU ARE A MEMBER! Yes, it is THAT EASY! Membership runs from January 1 to December 31. Sorry, there are no prorated partial year memberships. Also, please check your membership status. If you can’ find your 2008 card, chances are you are not a current member. You can stop in anytime, or send in your dues with your raffle tickets for the fish derby. If you are not signed up by the fall newsletter, you will be removed from our mailing list.
